Should you answer the call from Internal Revenue Service? Beware of Tax Scams.

There is another tax scam going on nowadays targeting people especially taxpayers with foreign names. The people conducting the tax scam have been threatening people with deportation, arrest, and/or prosecution of lawsuit if a payment is not made. The scammers will ask for a prepaid debit card and/or gift card – most likely from a retail store such as Walmart, Target, etc.

First thing to do is when you get a phone call like this is to hang up and put it on a no call list. The IRS is not in the business of threatening people by making such phone calls. The scammers are well aware of the fear that the IRS puts into people and are utilizing into deceiving taxpayers to give up their hard-earned money.

If the Internal Revenue Service decides to get in touch with you, they will send you a notice by mail. The mail will be sent to the most current address on file with IRS. The IRS will not give you a phone call to demanding payments in an aggressive manner and they will not say that failure of payments will result in deportation or jail time or prosecution. Additionally, if you do receive a notice and/or a phone call that makes threatening claims, it is important to call the IRS number on the IRS website at: https://www.irs.gov/uac/irs-offers-new-toll-free-numbers-to-assist-taxpayers website or to get in touch with a tax professional to verify the validity of the letter or phone call.

Per the IRS.Gov website:
“Note that the IRS will never:

  • Call to demand immediate payment using a specific payment method such as a prepaid debit card, gift card or wire transfer. Generally, the IRS will first mail you a bill if you owe any taxes.
  • Threaten to immediately bring in local police or other law-enforcement groups to have you arrested for not paying.
  • Demand that you pay taxes without giving you the opportunity to question or appeal the amount they say you owe.
  • Ask for credit or debit card numbers over the phone.”
